I met Lakisha nearly two years ago, in 2017. I was in search of a counselor, who could help me resolve deep anxiety issues, which I had struggled with for years.  That year marked a time when I desired to move forward in life, and felt I needed help to resolve the anxiety that had hindered me from doing so much. As I scanned through images and bios of counselors on a popular website, I was focused on certain qualities in a counselor. I found Lakisha’s profile and ultimately contacted her. In meeting Lakisha, I recognized that she was honest, a great listener, and truly wanted to help me. She offered concrete counsel and tangible ways to overcome anxiety. It marveled me that week after week, she did not jot down notes as we spoke. However, she was able to recall significant details of things I had shared in our sessions. As time went on, she was able to help me find root causes of the anxiety (something I deeply desired to understand). She helped me make connections between thoughts/experiences and my behavior. Also, I learned how to identify problems and to use effective strategies to problem solve. As a result, I learned not to run away from anxiety, but to tackle/confront it. One of the ways we accomplished this was to counteract negative thoughts with positive affirmations. These strategies ultimately helped to reprogram negative thinking and gave me more peace of mind.
